30 years of BESA

30 years of BESA – this milestone brings up a lot of memories! While the company was founded at the Kopfklinik in Heidelberg, Germany, Coolio rapped about Gangsta’s Paradise, Tom Hanks starred in Apollo 13, Angela Merkel had just started as a minister in the German government, and Michael Jordan came back from retirement to win three more NBA titles. Starting in the basement of the hospital next to the MEG device (which is still running today!), the company soon relocated to Gräfelfing near Munich.

The first blockbuster software release was BESA 99, which combined the previously successful programs EEGFocus for data review and averaging, and BESA 3.0, an MS-DOS-based source localization program. The offering was soon enhanced by the Source Coherence module which pioneered connectivity analysis in brain source space, and BESA MRI which enabled combining structural and functional brain imaging in BESA software. BESA became a certified manufacturer of medical products in the EU, and BESA Epilepsy was launched as a tool to automatically analyze long-term epilepsy data. Over the years, many more software solutions, features, and improvements were added to facilitate analysis workflows.

Now, BESA maintains a broad product offering for all types of EEG, MEG, and OPM analysis in human neurophysiology. BESA has also engaged in several long-term partnerships with leading hardware providers in the field, especially with Nihon Kohden and MEGIN. Most importantly, BESA continues to boast a highly skilled and motivated team which makes all this innovation and product portfolio possible. 30 years – and we are just getting started!
